Telephone Conversation Between Captain Johnson, Police
Department, Bedford, Virginia, and Major Reid, February
3, 1943
REID: I have two men on the way there - Captain Hall
and Major Kane. They should arrive about 4:00 or 4:30.
Have the bodies been removed?
JOHNSON: No sir. It's snowing like the devil up here.
Everything is intact. I told them not to move
anything.
REID: Have you got any facilities for moving them?
Will they have to carry them out on stretchers?
JOHNSON: Yes, I could possibly round up some men and
go in there.
REID: I a representative of CAA there yet. Any Army
men?
JOHNSON: An Army man came in from Roanoke, but I
haven't contacted him. There is a State Trooper up
there.
REID: I guess we will have to wait until our men get
there and look at the bodies before they are moved. I
would like to have you arrange for help for them.
JOHNSON: They are trying to locate a better route in
there.
REID: I have told Captain Hall to contact you. Do you
have an undertaking establishment in Bedford?
JOHNSON: Yes.
REID: You might make arrangements with them to take
care of these bodies. They will be charged with the
responsibility.
JOHNSON: Tell them by your authority?
REID: Yes.
JOHNSON: Is it "Major Reid?"
REID: Yes. Is there any possibility of anyone around
to take pictures?
JOHNSON: I don't know whether I would be able to get
them or not. There is and old man and one of these
amateur photographers.
REID: Will you arrange to have someone who has a
camera to take pictures? Have him available for Captain
Hall when he gets there?
JOHNSON: Yes.
REID: Have Captain Hall call me immediately when he
gets in. I will expect that call about 4:30.
JOHNSON: Yes. Glad to cooperate with you.
