Telephone Conversation between Captain M. B. Hall at
Bedford, Virginia, and Major Reid, February 3, 1943.
REID: Made it in quick time, didn't you?
HALL: Didn't break any speed limits.
REID: Snowing yet?
HALL: Sun is out right now, but it has been
snowing.
REID: What have you found out?
HALL: Just got in. I'm in Chief of Police's office and
just started talking to him and just started talking to
him and thought I had better call and see if there were
any new developments.
REID: None here. Have bodies been removed?
HALL: No.
REID: Apparently, thing to do is to get bodies out.
This is number one job.
HALL: Chief of Police just told me that a State
Trooper and two other officers were up there now. I
imagine they want relief.
REID: Arrange to get a couple of pictures if you can.
Also get statements from any witnesses. Make a general
description. Find out all you can. I am having the
Operations Officer from Columbia to call or send a
message to the undertaking establishment about
disposition of the bodies. What kind of establishment is
it?
HALL: Seems to be a reasonable size city.
REID: What is the name of the undertaking
establishment?
HALL: M. P. Carter Company, Bedford, Virginia.
REID: What is the telephone number?
HALL: 2551
REID: The jurisdiction of this thing at the moment is
in our hands as far as investigating is concerned. You
get all the information, and we will transfer it to
another outfit. Columbia Air Base will furnish undertaker
with information as to disposition of bodies. He knows
everybody that was on board. Possibly they will have a
man up there tomorrow. They will send up any additional
information necessary. If you get the bodies taken care
of, the rest is not high priority. If Richmond Sub-Depot
takes care of the wreckage, it won't be for about three
or four days.
REID: They are finding out now whether Pope Field will
take care of it. At any rate, we will get you relieved as
soon as possible. Go ahead, if you can get anything going
tonight.
HALL: I will discuss it with these men.
REID: If you have anything, and can't get me here,
call me at home - 3-3985.
HALL: I will give you a ring if I run into any
difficulties.
