Lieutenant Beniga's home town was Marietta, Minnesota He was 22 years old when he died on Sharp Top Mountain, near Bedford, Virginia, on February 2, 1943, in the crash of a B25D U.S. Air Corps "Mitchell" bomber.During his Christmas leave, George was married in a simple ceremony to his sweetheart Ruth. They were together only a month when George was killed.
DIXON-BENINGA "Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dixon announces the marriage of their daughter, Ruth Cynthia to Lt. George R. Beninga, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Beninga of this place on January 1st at 3 o'clock at Columbia, S.C. The ceremony was performed by Chaplain Hugh V. Parry at the Columbia Air Base chapel.
The bride was attired in a blue wool dress and her matron of honor, Mrs. Clyde C. Angly, wore a printed silk dress. Both wore corsages of pink roses. The groom and his attendant, Lt. Clyde C. Angley were in uniform.
The bride has been employed in Minneapolis for the past two years having graduated from the Minneapolis business college.
The groom was called into the armed services in February 1941 with the National Guard. Last spring he transferred to the air corps taking his aviation cadet training at Maxwell Field, Ala. Last Nov. 21 he received his commission of 2nd Lieutenant and the silver wings of a Bombardier at Roswell, New Mexico, and is now stationed at Columbia Air Base at Columbia, S.C.
Following a short honeymoon at Charleston, S.C., Lt. and Mrs. Beninga will be at home at 2603 Cooper Avenue, Columbia, S.C."
